Weight Loss Motivation

The key to a long-term, sustainable healthy lifestyle is motivation and fueling your burning desire for change. Do you have that insatiable burning desire that compels you to work hard, not to give up, stay focused on your health, and lifestyle changes? Is your burning desire to lose weight, gain strength, feel vibrant and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle stronger than your desire for junk food, alcohol, and lying on the couch?

You may feel you do not have the weigh loss motivation but this is not the case, we all have it inside of us and it’s just a matter of awakening it. Have you achieved things that required focus, hard work and drive? The answer is undoubtedly yes, you may have worked hard to get through college, built a business, worked multiple jobs and made sacrifices to purchase a home. Whatever your accomplishment, you did it and your motivation played a integral role in making it happen.

Similarly, you’ll need motivation to achieve your health goals. You need to be mindful of what you are eating to fuel your body so it can work at its optimum level. You need the drive to exercise regularly and make it a priority in your life.

To successfully achieve your health goals you must take actions that will continually fuel your motivation and desire for change. So let’s explore a few ways on how to get motivated to achieve a new healthy regime!

Set Small Attainable Goals

Goals are essential when planning for a specific outcome, break your overall goal down into mini-goals e.g. drink more water, eat healthier, etc (research states it takes 66 days to form a new habit). So pick a single goal and focus your attention to making the goal an integral part of your new lifestyle by incorporating new habits into life. Celebrating your mini-goals is also just as important, so make sure you take the time to celebrate with a treat that does not conflict with your goals.

Make Positive Decisions

Never underestimate the Power of Making Positive Decisions. Tell yourself that you “Can”, the mind has a tremendous capacity to do whatever you tell it to. If we explore the two decision statements below:

“I hate working out and going to the gym. I am tired. I am hungry. I don’t have the time.”
“I am excited to work out and going to the gym! This small step will energize my body, mind, and spirit-fueling my motivation to achieve my goal”.

Take a moment to explore these two statements, do either sound similar to your own internal dialog. All of us have moments where negative self-chatter kills our motivation, explore your own internal dialogue and think about the things you tell yourself that hold you back. Positive statements activate your brain and motivate you to take action!

We have a mantra at The Biggest Loser Resort: I CAN, I WILL, I DARE, I DO. Dare yourself to start thinking, acting, and speaking more positively. You will be amazed by the impact of reframing your internal dialog and verbal expressions on your motivation to achieve your goals. Changing habits formed over a lifetime is tough so this technique may not work immediately but the more you practice it, the more it will stick and be part of your outlook on life.

Plan for your Success and Victory

Having visions such as getting into shape, leading a healthy lifestyle, losing weight are all great but lack a strategic goal, they are just great dreams but are too open-ended.

You must incorporate healthy eating, exercise and goal setting into a workable and sustainable lifestyle change with so much going on in life. Here are a few tips that I have found to be extremely helpful in my own journey to losing 85lb, resulting in a vibrant life and free of pain:

1. IDENTIFY YOUR WHY? Your “why” should be so strong, that you can see it, feel, it, experience it. I call it the “Why that makes you cry!” That’s how strong your why needs to be. Once your why is clearly in view, that becomes the focus of my second helpful hint; Planning Your Victory.

2. PLANNING FOR YOUR VICTORY. Can be fun and easy with today’s technology. There are many inexpensive apps that create daily planning sheets and schedules to keep you on track, ensure you schedule your non-negotiables (like work, church). Plan your shopping list before you go to the grocery store. Plan for prepping your meals and your “Healthy Fast Foods to Go”. Plan when you are going to go out and “Play” as we call it at The Biggest Loser Resort. Do something you love to do and go out and do it! Planning is the key to achieving your goals and celebrating your Victories.

3. CREATE A VISION BOARD. Vision Boards are a great tool and motivator to fuel your motivation. Put a picture of a body silhouette you would like to achieve, then cut out a picture of your face and place it on the silhouette; may sound cheesy but it is important to visualize your goal. If there is anything that is related to your weight loss goals or as I like to call it “releasing weight” goals, put it on your board. This should serve as daily inspiration, make it your wallpaper on your cell phone, write or post it everywhere. The fun and amazing part of this practice is that you can create vision boards for any aspect of your life.

This is a fun, interactive activity that you can do by yourself or even as a family. What does your family wish to accomplish in the coming weeks, months or years? Kids and teens love it, too, because it gives them a sense of belonging, having a voice in the family unit, and working together as a family to achieve and celebrate the Victory of the family’s goals and plans! It instills a sense of achievement toward a specific goal and really fun to celebrate together as a family. Once your vision is in place, then put a strategic plan together with everyone’s input and measure your successes. Try it, you will be glad you did!

4. GO PUBLIC. Yes, I said it, GO PUBIC with your intentions. Tell everyone. Even if you are a private person, be brave and do it anyway! Stating your intentions will publicly will hold you accountable. I experienced this first-hand and the motivation and encouragement I received from friends, family and even those that I did not know was awesome and a true motivator. So go ahead, post your intentions on Facebook or any other Social Media platform; post your results every day; post a new recipe, or challenge your followers to join you in your quest for better health, fitness and lifestyle changes.

5. KEEP A JOURNAL. This is another great way to measure your success, record the highs and lows of achieving your goals. It is also a great way to identify barriers you are encountering that trigger emotions that cause unbalanced and unhealthy choices. Often, our emotions release hormones that cause our brain to trigger a programmed response to automatically crave foods high in sugar, salt, fat and carbohydrates to comfort ourselves when faced with stress or uncertain times and situations. By journaling, you can begin to see the relationship your emotions have with positive or negative eating responses and making the necessary adjustments to re-align these moments with your burning desire for change.

Motivation is one of the key ingredients in the recipe of life that keeps you making positive decisions, healthy choices, and ultimately achieving your life’s goals. It ramps up your vision and burning desire for incredible transformation and changes that can sustain a healthy lifestyle for the months and years to come!
