When you go online and search Apple Cider Vinegar. You will be presented with page upon page containing information including lots of wild claims on apple cider vinegar and weight loss. Several studies have been carried out supporting some of the health benefits of taking apple cider vinegar but it is not a miracle cure all solution as suggested by some. Apple cider vinegar has been popular in the health community for some time and its consumption has been credited to various health benefits but there is also lots of conjecture with many of the claims not supported by rigorous scientific studies. Taking apple cider vinegar in isolation is unlikely to result in weight loss but combining it with a healthy balanced diet and exercise is likely to yield results. What is apple cider vinegar?

The word “vinegar” translates to “sour wine” in French because the production process is related to the way alcohol is made. Apple cider vinegar is made from the liquid from crushed apples, yeast and bacteria are added to the liquid to begin the fermentation process turning the sugars in alcohol, the next part of the process converts the alcohol into vinegar by acetic-acid forming bacteria. Apple cider vinegar is very low in calories but is also contains very few vitamins and minerals. There are some amino acids and antioxidants contained but the amounts vary depending on the quality.

Taking it straight is not recommended and should be used in cooking or as a salad dressing, if you don’t mind the taste you can drink by diluting in water. Please make sure you use raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar like the popular Braggs brand found at almost any store. Normal consumption is 1 tablespoon daily, you can start with a teaspoon and work your way up to tablespoon.

Apple cider vinegar makes you feel fuller

Studies suggest that apple cider vinegar can increase the feeling of being full, resulting in eating less and consuming fewer calories. This is especially true if you incorporate it with meals high in carbs, you will feel an increased sensation of feeling full. For the best results, you should reduce your calorie intake alongside consuming apple cider vinegar which should translate into weight loss.

Apple cider vinegar kills bacteria

For centuries vinegars have been used for cleaning, disinfecting, treating ailments such as nail fungus, lice and ear infections. The acetic acid can kill pathogens and some bacteria’s in the body and can prevent some from multiplying.

Apple cider vinegar lowers blood sugar levels

Possibly the most successful application is in individuals with type 2 diabetes, high bloods sugars are known to accelerate the process of ageing and cause various chronic diseases. Apple cider vinegar helps to keep blood sugar levels stable and for those suffering from type 2 diabetes apple cider vinegar lowers blood glucose and insulin sensitivity. Apple cider vinegar will not keep your blood sugar levels in check on its own so for the best results it is important to reduce or avoid refined carbs and sugar.

Apple cider vinegar has other preventative health benefits

There are many articles claiming that apple cider vinegar fixes all manner of issues including high cholesterol, heart disease, allergies, cures colds as well body detoxification and increased fat burning. There have been some successful animal studies showing vinegar consumption can prevent or reduce the onset of some of these ailments but these cannot be substantiated without more research and studies on humans.

Are there any side effects associated with apple cider vinegar consumption?

If you consume it at normal levels there should not be any significant side effects. If you consume too much you could experience digestive discomfort, throat burns and erosion of tooth enamel.
